Basra Marathon - Saturday 28th November 2009

From Dickie

Just to let you know I ran the Basra Marathon this morning. Organised by the US Military and set on the base it was run in conjunction with a 10 miler.

After an unusual 4 week training schedule and a year with achilles tendon problems my time was never going to be good. However, I was chuffed to bits to record 3 41, 7th overall, first veteran and second Brit home (there were only 2 of us).

Conditions were less than perfect for marathon running. A 5am start, one large desert, numerous burning oil wells, full protection from a series of Humvees, heat and flies. Also it decided to heave it down just as we got underway turning most of the roads into a cross country course. We also took in the sites of the 2003 battlefield with close ups of the detrius of war. Sorry, my mistake, perfect marathom conditions.

My aim was to finish, run all the way round and beat 4 hours as Jo promised a posh meal if I did. What better incentive could there be.

However, set on a measured course it means another big city marathon ticked off.

Back in my pod drinking tea and watching Sleepless in Seattle. A perfect day all round.
