Thursday saw the second race in Division 2 of the Midweek Road Race League. 16 ladies, 41 men and 10 marshalls and spectators joined in on a rainy evening in Stevenage. Once again, there was an outstanding performance from the North Herts Road Runners ladies team finishing in first place with 4 ladies in the top 5 places. Astrid Mckeown finished in first place with Paula Adams in 2nd, Natasha Pittman in 3rd, Melissa Winters in 5th, Jo Summers in 15th and Jo Harbon in 18th making up the winning team. Moreover, the North Herts ladies veterans team also finished in first place. The men's team also repeated their first race performance by finishing in third place with Steve Mckeown leading the team in 7th, Gary Cook in 15th, James Atkins in 25th, Pete Scrowther in 34th, Richard Harbon in 35th Pete Northover in 26th, Stewart Bryant in 49th, Adrian Sherwood in 54th, John Franklin in 59th, Johnny Spinks in 65th Martyn Annetts in 66th and Mike Moralee in 68th. With two races left in the competition, NHRR are still neck-and-neck with Fairlands Valley Spartans at the top of the division, with only the latter's superior race points tally separating the clubs.
Further afield, in Edinburgh Lucy Sparkes completed her first marathon. Despite having struggled with injury in the months prior to the marathon, Lucy was ecstatic to finish in 4:13:54. The Essex PB 5 lived up to its name as Keiron McGill returned from injury to record a new personal best, breaking the 30 minute barrier in 29:56. Linda Aird ran the off road Brandon Forest Half Marathon for the second time. The event is run on tracks and forest trails and Linda managed a PB by 12 seconds of 1:58:06. Mike Mello was pleased with his spur of the moment decision to take part in the Dorking 10 mile race finishing in 1:15:55.
