The North Herts Road Runners stand at the top of the Hertfordshire Mid-week League Division 2 after the first race at Bishops Stortford on Wednesday 14th May. The Squirrels are level on points with local rivals the Fairlands Valley Spartans but ahead on overall runners' score.
NHRR's ladies' team were dominate in the first race of the series securing firs place by a comfortable margin. Astrid McKeown finished first over the 10k course in 37:31. She was followed home by Paula Adams (40:59) in second place and Melissa Winters (41.32) in third. There were also excellent performances from Jane Chappel (6th: 42:47), Jo Summers (16th: 46:17) and Jo Harbon (16th: 46:37).
The men's team finished third overall with Steve Mckeown leading the way in 10th place in a time of 35:35. Gary Cook followed in 14th in 36:39 and Kieron McGill continued his splendid form finishing in 20th place in 37:34. Christophe Mercer recorded a time of 38:27 to finish in 25th place and Pete Scrowther followed closely behind in a new PB of 39:11 to secure 39th place. Stewart Smither was second in the V60 age category crossing the line in 43:37.
The next race in the league is hosted by the Fairlands Valley Spartans on 29th May.
The North Herts Road Runners ladies' recorded a one-two at the Wheathampstead 10k on Sunday. Natasha Pitman won the ladies race over the hilly course in the Hertfordshire countryside in a time of 40:30. Melissa Winters completed the club's dominate performance finishing second in 40.40. A number of the club's men were also involved in the race. Johnny Spinks completed the demanding course in 42:59 with Mike Mello finishing not far behind in 44.13.
Kieron McGill followed his impressive Mid-Week League performance with a personal best 1:03.55 at the Great Baddow 10 at the weekend. Keiron is confident that further improvements are yet to come and posted the new PB even though feeling the effects of the week's earlier race. Allison Cook travelled further afield to complete the historic White Peak Marathon near Matlock in 5 h 18.
