Standalone 10K – main report
Despite wet and windy conditions, the 21st running of the Standalone 10k proved to be a great success for North Herts Road Runners on Sunday. Over 100 helpers, including NHRR members, family, friends and local cadets ensured the smooth running of the annual event based at Standalone Farm in Letchworth.
Over 60 entrants on the day boosted numbers which did not seem to be deterred by the poor weather. 849 finishers were pleased to complete the well marshalled course following the special guest lead cyclist Max Pendleton, father of Olympic cyclist Victoria. The course passed through Letchworth, Norton and along the Stotfold bypass before returning to the farm.
Last year's men's and ladies' champions successfully defended their titles. In the men's race, Stotfold runner Neilson Hall of North Herts Road Runners even went one better by winning the race in a new course record of 31:05. Neilson was well clear of second place runner Stephen Harrison of FVS TRI who finished in 33:22 with David Alcock of Victoria Park Harriers & Tower Hamlets AC finishing in 3rd place in a time of 33:42. In the ladies' race, Astrid McKeown made it a double for North Herts Road Runners by finishing in first place, as well as 18th overall in the main race, in an excellent time of 36:54. Louise Peters of Stopsley Striders was second in 39:05 with Katherine March of Barnet & District in third in 39:39.
The Hertfordshire County Veteran championships also took place at the event. Astrid McKeown completed a successful day by taking the gold medal in the V35 championships with gold medals also for Veronica Shadbolt, Garden City Runners (V45), Judy Pomphrey, St Albans Striders (V55) and Eleanor Draper, Garden City Runners (V65). In the men's event, Andy Holt of Garden City Runners won the gold medal in the male V40 category with Keith McLellan topping off a victorious day for Garden City Runners by gaining a gold medal in the V50 category. The NHRR duo of Stuart Smither (V60) and Don Powell (V70) also won county gold medals.
The main event was followed by the 2 mile children's fun round around the grounds of the farm. A great time was had by all, including Colin the Clown who was present to accompany the children across the finish line.
